Arizona sun at Catalina state park

Three exhausted travelers finally arrive in Arizona!  We are at Catalina State Park, just north of Tucson.  Love this place!  It’s tucked in just under the Catalina Mountains.  Very nice facilities and feels like one is way out in the boonies.  Coyotes serenade us every evening and the sun plays off the mountains as it sets.

But less than one mile away, just across the 4 lane, is Wal-Mart and a variety of shops and restaurants.

Today we were rested enough to explore one of the hiking trails.  Got a late start….when do we ever get an early start?….and the sun started beating us up before we made the trail loop.  Managed to take a few pictures.  This is the Sonoran desert and saguaro cactus are in abundance.

The hike is up to a small pool of water where we rested and turned back.  If we were in better shape, we could have hiked for miles in the Romero Canyon.  Lots of familiar plants and cactus are everywhere….I’m frustrated that I knew their names two years ago and I must relearn the names of all the foliage.

Nice campsite!  Opted to go without electric hook ups as we are in a saving money mode.  It’s suppose to be warm in AZ!  Just learned from a park volunteer that it’s 7+ degrees colder here than what the Weather Channel says.  Our new thermometer reported an inside temp of 37 this AM.  We are using our Sport Cat sparingly and, occasionally, turned on the gas stove.

Our trip west has had challenges….the extreme cold, adjusting to traveling with an animal and his kitty litter box and just not feeling well with various respiratory and stomach complaints.

But we are here and the trouble and misery will be worth it….once we’re rested!

Sylvester is climbing the walls…goes up the wall next to the closet like it’s a tree!  (His food is kept in the top of the closet.) Poor baby needs more space.  But he appears terrified every time we take him outside.

Tomorrow we are heading for Ajo, AZ for the Darby Wells area.  RV Sue seems to like that place…..so we are going to check it out.

Hope to camp near Glenda and Jeff who are boon docking somewhere in the Ajo vicinity.

Closing with pictures from Texas…Monahan Sandhills State Park.

    1. Thanks, Jerry, I am feeling fine now. Hope to report soon on Ajo...a wonderful Sonoran desert experience!

I am going to use this space to apologize for the delay in replying to my comments.....Monday was a travel day and Tuesday AM was a time to rest from the travel. That afternoon I discovered I could not get on the internet with my 1X coverage. Currently sitting in the AJo IGA parking lot!

    1. Will certainly pass on your regards to Glenda and Jeff....they are camped about 200 feet from us. And it is wonderfully warm! We slept with all the windows open last night.
See you in a few weeks!

  3. Ahhhh!!! Gorgeous photos! This is what I was waiting for! I had to expand the fourth one. It's spectacular -- one of those that grabs my heart and I can get lost in.

I wondered if Sylvester was climbing the walls. Does he have those crazy spells where he tears from end to end of the trailer howling like a banshee to get out? We had to find a new home for our cat when we started traveling in the Aliner because he simply could not adapt to travel and being confined. I had thought that Sylvester would turn out to be one of those cats who would make a good traveler.

    1. Sylvester is adjusting....I'm the one with the problem. We have let him outside, now we are away from people and cars. He has been rolling in the dust. And, no, he has not been crying to get out....just waking us in the night when he gets bored or hungry.

Thanks for your nice words about the photos...I did not take the time to do any cropping or editing so they could have been nicer. I must learn all over again how to use the laptop without electricity

  6. Feel so bad after seeing Sylvester's photo. He does not look like a happy kitty. We've hiked in Catalina before.... If you get back that way, make sure you do the bike out to the falls, and pack a lunch. Happy travels. Hope things improve as the weather does.

    1. HIKE out to the falls, not bike! Sorry.

    2. Sylvester's "natural" look is solemn...we always thought it was because of the two older (and irritable) female cats in our home..but his look has not changed on the trip. I think he is slowly adjusting...(I know that I am!)
We love Catalina SP so believe another trip is in the future. Thanks for the info about the hike!
