Mountain Rally, Bigger Truck and Challenging Gulf Shores Trip

Cherokee Rally at Happy Holiday RV Park
It's a struggle to get started writing when it's a month or more between posts.  Thought I would just put a synopsis in the title...to keep me on track!

What should I say about the Cherokee Rally?  It is a lovely setting that's on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains in western North Carolina.  The changing of the leaves makes it even more special.

We had our Texas friends right next to us and our Oliver friends on the other side of the pond.  Most of my time was spent shuttling between the two campsites....when I was not struggling with the campground personnel.

Background:  In 2014 I was the rally host ( hostess?) and learned that I did not have the right set of genes to tolerate administrative duties.  (Think I already knew this!)  After a few upsets with the campground not keeping their agreements, I said "never again".

Decided to set up a rally date for 2015, hoping someone else would take over as the host.  But no clear leader emerged and, again, the stress of coordinating with the campground kept me upset.  Correction! Take responsibility!  I allowed myself to become upset.
It took two years to learn the lesson...now I know not to do it again.

Maybe someone else will take over or maybe there will not be a rally.  Either way, next year we will be somewhere else.

On the positive side,  everyone else seems to have such a lovely time.  The open house is a great success.  We enjoy lots of visitors, showing the Escape for 4 hours!
The weather is perfect with lots of blue sky and sunshine!  This is our 6th rally here.  We have been here every year since 2010.

Terri giving the crowd instructions.  She is great!

After making three trips into the mountains, pulling the Escape with the 2002 Tacoma, we decide that it's time to get a more powerful truck.  Our Taco is great on the flat and hills but it is struggling in the mountains.

Many friends are happy with their Tundras.  They report an average towing mpg similar to what we are getting with our Tacoma...13 to 14 mpg.
We buy the first and only Tundra we see!  (It was being traded-in just as we arrived at the dealership.)  We will eventually see if we were hasty and foolish.

It is big and beautiful!  Looks new but it is 8 years old.  Pulls like a dream and it was the right color!

We buy the Tundra a few days after the Cherokee rally.  Nine days after buying the truck we are on our way to Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  Our reservations have been made months ago. The weather was frigid in November last year so the plan is to cancel if the weather did not cooperate.  Beautiful warm weather is  forecast!

We had also bought what I call a "baby Clam".  After spending many pleasant nights in a friend's Clam, we decided to get the very small, 6 foot by 6 foot tent.

You can't see them in the photo but there are two large fire ant hills on either side of the Clam. Unfortunately, I step into the front one while attaching the screen panel! In an instant my ankle has fifteen large bites resulting in burning, pain, swelling and itching!

And that is Day 1.

By Day 2 I could tell this trip is not going well.  The heat and humidity has put the hubby in bed, feeling lifeless, wet dishrag style.  The AC is on by mid morning. The sun is relentless.  My leg is still hurting.

A trip to the campground office reveals that we can cancel....(maybe because I show her my red, swollen ankle) and get a refund. So we will leave Thursday instead of Sunday.  After the decision to leave is made, no time is wasted as the clouds roll in, David revives, and we head to the beach.

The sad part of leaving is saying good-bye to some wonderful friends who are camped down the road.  But the great thing about the fiberglass community, we will see them again at the spring rally.  Or Quartzsite, AZ!

Our trip home is uneventful except for a few showers. The truck, still intimidating because of its size, pulls smoothly.

The following Sunday it is pouring rain and we are thankful to be home!

Sylvester says he is ready to go!

The plan is to head southwest in 6 weeks.  Desert here we come!

Apologies and Summer Recap

DSC_7268

Although shame would run through me when I realized how long it had been since I posted, the guilt was not great enough to get me to write.   At times I would think of my loyal readers and try to heap coals upon my head, but it did not work!

For my lack of discipline….I am sorry!  I am vowing to do better in the future.

My last post, the end of July, praised the campground at Mt Pisgah on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We returned home with good spirits ready to tackle more painting of the paneling.  (For those not following our adventure…..after touring Alaska and the West last summer, 2013, we decided to sell the house and move into something smaller.  This summer has been about downsizing and getting the house ready to sell.)

IMG_0477(Done….photo makes it look more narrow than reality.)

After completing the painting, our house took on a new energy!  Our de-cluttering and lightening the dark walls made the space so much more enjoyable.  I could sit in the kitchen and watch the morning light move across the walls.

David’s grandson arrived around this time with a U haul trailer, taking away many of the old family heirlooms and almost all of hubby’s woodshop!  Between the new energy of our home and absence of old family pieces, I began to feel happy!   Have not been very happy since we came off the road in March.

We managed to attend a brief fiberglass rally at Fall Creek Falls State Park.  It was great to see old friends but constant thunderstorms got in the way of photography.  We were there less than 48 hours!

About this time we started reevaluating our plans to sell.  It’s so important for us to spend the winter in the southwest…more a priority than selling the house!  It was decided to put our home on the market next spring after returning from the winter trip.  What a relief!!!

Since that decision was made, we have been enjoying ourselves!  The photo of the water and crepe myrtle is at Chester Frost Park where we spent several days last week.  Our kayaks have been neglected this summer….now we can justify keeping them!

It has taken 6 months but we have learned (or relearned) how to enjoy life at home!  We are biking and hiking….not much, just  a little, spending time with friends, listening to bluegrass on Thursdays, going to movies and I have seen Seasons 2, 3, and 4 of Downton Abbey, DVD’s from our public library!

In two weeks we will be heading to another fiberglass rally at Land Between the Lakes….after that comes the Cherokee Rally, one of my favorite events!   And we may squeeze in a trip to the panhandle of Florida before Christmas!

And we are still downsizing……I have never been so sure of something.  For everything there is a season….and this is my season to let go of all things without purpose or beauty.

One of my inspirations is a blog that was mentioned by my blogging friend, Kim.    I found the Be More With Less blog from her….thank you!

And thanks to you readers who have not abandoned me. Love!

Looking For Balance, Love in the Rally

Apologies for waiting so long to post…..there’s no good excuse, except the continuing emotional rollercoaster of downsizing.

Not wanting to reenter the world of depression, we start working on the basement soon after returning from the Townsend rally.

There’s another room to the right where most of my energy is being spent.  It’s almost empty of my possessions….can’t say the same for the hubby!  Thus the roller coaster.  On this particular morning, don’t know if we will be able to sell the house.  Is it worth going through all the conflict?  When trying to push (him), our relationship suffers.  Life is too short!

I’m trying to remember how to live, happily, in a house, in a town, in the same place.  Trying to reconnect with people I enjoy and it’s challenging after being away so long!  Taking more effort than available.  Looking for balance between the travel world full of bloggers and fiberglass rallies  and the home world with family and old friends.  Must also find a way to balance the downsizing work with exercise and socializing.  This hermit stuff is not working for me!

Subject change…….

Townsend 2014

It’s a rainy Tuesday when we arrive at the Townsend/ Great Smokies KOA.  We enter a pull though and don’t unhitch.  Our 4 night stay on the river starts tomorrow.

Pleasantly surprised that many good friends are already here.  Find a whole row of old friends with new trailers, some moving to Escapes, some to more traditional S. O. B.’s, (some other brand).  One of our favorite couples arrived 4 nights ago! We walk, frequently stopping to chat and catch up with our buddies.

And the rally begins……non-stop visiting and eating for 4 days!

We are getting braver with the Dutch oven, preparing a breakfast casserole for the morning pot luck.  Black Forest dump cake is a success the following night.  (Notice, below, the bottom spoon scrapings.)

Difficult to describe a rally….it’s all about the energy of the people….their love for each other and their trailers.  Going to parade just a few of our friends…..

This is our third rally in six months and I find myself enjoying the events more and more.  Each one better than the last.  This time I feel so much love in my heart….are the people here more loving?  Or have I changed and can accept the love that was already there?  Whatever!  Loving the feeling of being loved!

There are 64, maybe more, trailers here.  Many friends are not in the pictures as it is Saturday before I remember the blog and the need for documentation.

A few trailers:

Most of the campers, as usual, are Casitas….from the old to the new.

The high spot of the rally is always the Saturday night pot luck.  Hungry folk wait patiently for their turn.

One of the reasons the pot luck is so appealing…..this is made in a Dutch oven!

And it is over!  Time for goodbyes and plans to meet again!

We decide to spend another night in the Smokies as a few friends are heading to Elkmont campground.

Another night of tale swapping fun.

The weather forecast is ominous with several days of storms, possibly tornados, coming.  We are anxious to get home but a trip to Cherokee, NC is necessary. The Tacoma pulls the Chatta-Egg up and over Newfound Gap, elevation 5,046, without a problem.

Happy Holiday RV Park has had a few changes with a new pizza and breakfast addition.  We check out the covered pavilion and central fire pit.  Discuss some details with the manager and everything is good.  The 2014 Cherokee rally is just 5 months away!
