The Townsend Eggscursion 2015 and a Tale from the Past!

DSC_0008

This is our 6th year to attend the fiberglass rally held in Townsend, TN which borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  We manage to get a site on the Little River.

We love spending time with our friends while enjoying spring in the Park.  Unfortunately we have rain every day!  Not all day rain but enough to not leave camp without the raincoat.  My fun with the Nikon is very limited.

Visiting during the pot luck.

Lots of great photos of the gathering can be found on Jon's website.  It is great to see him and his lovely 17 foot Escape.  I get to thank him in person for adding this blog to his list of fiberglass trailer Links.

Going to shift gears now…probably should have created two posts but that’s not the way I do things!  Going to flash back in time to 2009, several years before this blog is born.

It is May 4th, 2009, four days after retiring from my state government job, and we are heading to Yellowstone and parts west, our first long trip in our little 13’ Casita.  My flowers in the back yard are blooming beautifully. I am sad to leave them.

The plan is to see Yellowstone NP and other places that lie along our path.

This is what we look like back in 2009.  Our precious 1990 13 foot Casita has everything but a table and a bathroom!  We love our Casita and are fascinated by all other fiberglass trailers.

We see Old Faithful and a lot of ice and snow. Headed Idaho and it started getting colder.  Turned around and went south into Utah…which is the point of the story.

We are at Bryce National Park and we spy anew fiberglass trailer across the campground.  It is  strange looking

We had never seen anything like it! As we walked by, the owners appeared.“It’s an Escape” they said. “We have traveled from Vermont to British Columbia to pick it up.”

Thus began our relationship with the Eddy’s.  Did not realize how important this chance meeting would be.  No photos of the trailer or our meeting.  Just a few of the Park.

We have  tea inside the Escape, the four of us sitting around their table.  They share a little trailer history…former Casita owners…and we share our story of rehabbing a pitiful old Casita that was formerly owned by the Navy Recreational Services.  We have breakfast at  the  lodge the next morning and say our goodbyes.

One year later, with a small suggestion from yours truly, they arrive at the rally at Townsend!

The Egg Camping Club of TN, GA and AL enjoy meeting the folks from New England.  This is when the club only had 30 to 40 trailers at a rally…..and almost none from out of the area.

Our new friends became our mentors in all things boon docking.  They taught us how to manage without electrical hookups.  Later that summer we managed to visit their area and see Ian’s  blacksmithing company.  He does beautiful work!

So the Escape trailer is introduced to the southeast and Houdini, their trailer, has  managed to make the trek south to the Eggscursion almost every spring.

Fast forward to January, 2012,   David and I are at our favorite  place  in Arizona, Tortilla Flat.  We are walking through camp and come across two Escapes, a 19 ft. and a fifth wheel.  A nice gentleman emerges….much like what happened in 2010…and we meet two lovely couples from south Texas.

The gentleman strongly suggests that we not miss the RV show in Quartzsite.  We spend maybe 20 minutes talking, and chatted  briefly later that day.

One week later we find them on Dome Rock Road and  more      precious relationships are made.  These two Texas couples became our mentors for the trip to Alaska.  We meet up with one couple in Quartzsite, AZ each winter and the other in Alabama.

Now one of the couples have given us an opportunity that we never thought to get.

Last week we sold our beloved 16 foot trailer.  She will be living in the western North Carolina mountains and we will be heading south to pick up our new to us 19 foot Escape.

I apologize in advance to any of my loyal Casita followers who might not like this decision.  We have adored our Casita and believe it is one of the best made trailers.  But it is time for a change for us…..remember I said changes were coming?

Our house is also on the market and lots of people are               seeing it.  Don’t know what’s next…we are just hanging on for the ride…and it feels like a roller coaster right now!!!

  4. Amazing how many of my blog friends are hanging up the house keys and keeping their little abode on wheels keys in their pockets. Oh how I envy you all - that was my dream a few years ago. Keep pursuing those dreams and make them a reality. My big one now is to get to Alaska with Eggie. Yes, can't wait to see your new abode on wheels.

  13. Love all these wonderful comments about us! We have met the most delicious people people because of our campers, but specially because of Houdini the Escape. You and David are equally important to us Lynne, and have shared so much of your lives, knowledge and sweetness with us. Maybe we'll get to camp with you again soon. We are very close to embarking for the second trip to BC, and this time to pick up Houdini 2. I know you will post photos of your Escape once it is sitting in your yard. We really look forward to seeing them!
We finally have Spring here in Vermont, and it is such a treat to be working in the garden wearing a tee shirt for the first time today! We'll stay in touch.

  14. Imagine your life is full to the brim with work and packing and the yard work thats required when spring finally makes it north.
.We are juggling packing to go get the Escape with vacating the house for prospective buyers to tour. Totally insane...also managed to paint the deck in the middle of everything else.

Have a very safe trip and yes there will be photos soon.

  15. Hey Lynn,
I just put in an order for a new 19' Escape!! I'll be selling my 17B soon. The next time we meet we'll have a lot to talk about (and show each other!!)

  16. Oh Anne! So very happy for you! Yes, we will have lots to say.

Is the wait time around 8 months or 6? I know you will want it before you make your yearly southwest trek. If you happen to be in Osoyoos, look up these dear friends...the Eddys from Vermont, the Stovalls from Georgia and Duke and Beverly Armendariz.
We have been swamped with physical labor...too tired to blog...but ready to catch up with cyberspace now.
