Fort MTN State Park

Warning!  This post is not about Casitas!  But about a lovely GA state park that is just south of Chattanooga.  (Where you can camp in your Casita!)

We had planned to camp more after returning from the Cherokee gathering; did not unpack the truck, left food in the camper.  When weekend camping did not work, I decided to look up some old hiking buddies and head down to Fort Mountain State Park. This park about 50 miles southeast of Chattanooga.  (Take the I-75 Dalton exit.)

The leaves did not disappoint us!  Beautiful scenes everywhere.

The trail was full of rocks and roots.

An old tower with mysterious origins was on top of the mountain.  There are two legends about the tower.  One talked about a moon-eyed people who built the tower and the other legend involved Welch people coming over in the 1100's and inhabiting the area.

We have been to the Manchester Old Stone Fort and to the Desoto Falls fortifications not realizing this Prince Madoc connection.

A stroll around the lake through the full campground ended the day.

  1. That definitely rivals the aspen in the Rockies. Beautiful color.

    1. We saw more color today. I think we are about at our peak.

Don't send us anymore of your Kansas dust, please!

    1. The hiking would be dreamy and more fun if I would get myself in better physical shape.
Good for you, being a runner!

    2. More like a run/walk runner these days. My feet haven't been feeling too hot...thinking I better back off and stick with the walking. Hate to mess them up even more down the road.

It's hard to get in a routine...constant battle. I'm lucky right now as have co-workers that are my lunch buddies...or I'm sure most days I'd wouldn't get myself in the groove. Wondering how full-time on the road is going to fair my routine.

My biggest obstacle is I'm pretty afraid of unfamiliar critters and the unknown around the hiking corner but married to man who would live in the woods. I have to figure out how to face my fears...find a book or get hypnotized :O)

    3. Just remember that you are bigger than anything out there, except bears! And they all should be scared of you!

  3. I am starting to sound like a broken record, but your photos really are stunning. What gorgeous country!

Hiking! So glad you had friends to go with since the camping didn't work out.

Fascinating stories about the Moon Eyed people. Learning a little history of a place really increases your appreciation of it, doesn't it?

  4. Thanks again for the encouragement!

Right now I am in the middle of my blog trying to edit it and make it work like it is supposed to work! Such frustration when the electronic world does not cooperate!
Glad that you had that extra week of fun!

  5. I came across your blog on Nina and Paul's site (Wheeling It). Thanks for showing us a part of the country we have not visited in our RV yet. We have been full-timing for a little over a year and are loving every minute of it, seeing much of the midwest and the west. it is a real treat to see the colors back east.

    1. If we were full timing we would also be out in the West. It is hard to find good free sites here in the southeast. Wintered in AZ last year and loved the desert! Tortilla Flatts in the Tonto N.F was our favorite.

Thank you for visiting and commenting.
Hope to be posting pictures from the forests of FL in a few months.
